Private Pancreatic Cancer Surgery for Canadians
Pancreatic surgery is some of the most demanding work in surgical oncology, and results are closely tied to the experience of the team. We match Canadians with pancreatic surgical specialists at centers that perform these operations routinely, without a referral and without a long wait to be seen.
- EYour scans reviewed by a pancreatic surgeon in days.
- EA clear answer on resectability, with no referral needed.
- ESurgery planned around chemotherapy if it comes first.
Your scans are ready, surgical answers shouldn’t wait.
- EWe arrange pancreatic surgical review with specialists in other provinces, the USA and Europe, so you're not limited to the next opening at a single hospital.
- EYour imaging, biopsy results, bloodwork and any stent or endoscopy reports are gathered into one file and in the surgeon's hands before your consult.
- EPancreatic workups tend to stall between tests: a CT waiting on a surgical read, an endoscopic biopsy waiting for a slot. We work to move those steps side by side instead of one after another.

The Right Pancreatic Surgeon for Your Diagnosis
The most important decision in pancreatic cancer is often made before the operation: can this tumor be removed, and should it come out now or after chemotherapy? That call depends on how the tumor sits against the arteries and veins around it, and assessments can differ between teams. We route your imaging to specialists who make this judgement routinely, across Canada, the USA and Europe, so your plan rests on the most informed read available.
Understanding Your Surgical Options
Whipple Procedure, Distal and Total Pancreatectomy Options
Tumors in the head of the pancreas are usually treated with a Whipple procedure. Those in the body or tail are usually treated with a distal pancreatectomy. Some cases call for removing the whole pancreas, and some small tumors can be removed on their own. Your surgeon will also weigh blood vessel involvement, your response to any chemotherapy and your overall health.
We can help you explore care for:
- NPancreatic adenocarcinoma
- NPancreatic neuroendocrine tumors
- NIPMN and pre-cancerous cysts
- NAmpullary cancer
- NDistal bile duct cancer
- NDuodenal cancer
- NTumors near major blood vessels
- NRestaging after chemotherapy
- NSecond opinions on resectability
Every test, opinion & option considered.
Pancreatic cancer care involves several tests, several specialists and several decisions. We bring them into one plan: your imaging, biopsy and bloodwork in a single file, a specialist review of your surgical options, and a surgery date booked.

SURGICAL EXPERTISE MEETS TECHNOLOGY
Advanced tumor mapping & vascular techniques for pancreatic surgery
The approach should follow the tumor, not the other way round. Depending on location and complexity, private surgical centers in our network offer open, laparoscopic and robotic-assisted pancreatic surgery. Minimally invasive approaches are most often used for tumors in the body and tail.
- NPancreas-protocol CT and MRI to map the tumor and nearby vessels.
- NEndoscopic ultrasound for precise biopsy and local staging.
- NRobotic-assisted Whipple and distal pancreatectomy where appropriate.
- NPancreas-sparing operations for small neuroendocrine tumors and cysts.

Questions about private pancreatic cancer surgery.
How is it decided whether my pancreatic tumor can be removed?
It depends on three things: whether the cancer has spread beyond the pancreas, how closely the tumor touches the major veins and arteries around it, and whether you're fit for a major operation. Surgeons use these to group tumors as resectable, borderline resectable or locally advanced. That grouping is a judgement made from detailed imaging, which is why a review by an experienced pancreatic surgeon matters.
My tumor was described as locally advanced. Is surgery ever back on the table?
Sometimes, but not often, and it's worth being clear about that. If a tumor wraps around major arteries, surgery usually isn't the first treatment. Some patients respond well enough to chemotherapy that a specialist will reconsider, and a few centers have particular experience with these cases. If the cancer has spread to the liver or the lining of the abdomen, an operation to remove the pancreatic tumor generally isn't recommended. A review will tell you where your case sits.
What records should I send for a pancreatic surgery review?
The most useful item is your CT itself — the actual images, not only the written report. Ideally that's a pancreas-protocol scan. Beyond that: MRI or MRCP, endoscopic ultrasound and biopsy reports, CA 19-9 results over time, any ERCP or stent reports, chemotherapy summaries and notes from previous abdominal surgery. Send what you have. If the surgeon needs more, we'll request it.
My scan shows a pancreatic cyst. Does it need surgery?
Often not. Many pancreatic cysts are watched over time rather than removed. Surgery is considered when a cyst shows higher-risk features, such as involvement of the main pancreatic duct, a solid component, steady growth or symptoms. A specialist review can tell you whether yours is one to watch or one to treat.
What is recovery like after a Whipple procedure?
Most patients stay in hospital for about a week or longer, and full recovery takes several weeks to a few months. Digestion often changes afterwards. Many people need enzyme capsules with meals, and some develop diabetes or find existing diabetes harder to manage. Removing the whole pancreas means lifelong insulin. Your surgical team will explain what's likely in your case before you decide.
Can private pancreatic cancer surgery be arranged within Canada, or will I need to travel abroad?
It depends on your case and on timing. Some patients are best served by a pancreatic team in another province. For others, a center in the USA or Europe offers an earlier date or specific expertise, such as vein reconstruction or robotic pancreatic surgery. We set out the options that fit your diagnosis so you can choose.
